THE HISTORY OF BOMBAY YACHT CLUB (continued)...

The first Bombay Yacht Club meeting was held at Peach Island, (by Windsor).  They had about thirty members at that time.  Only six or seven had boats, but they didn’t care.  Membership grew by leaps and bounds as they celebrated with parties every month.

By September 1984, it was decided that the club needed a meeting place so they went looking for an island.  In October, they found a spot.  An island north of Brown (in the Middle Channel).  The good news…it had several buildings and a reasonable price of $60,000.00.  The bad news…the island was inaccessible by land.  The health department had to approve sewage treatment facilities and the land was leased from the D.N.R. which had to approve its use as a club.

They formed a Bombay Investment Club of ten members, each contributing $1000.00 to put down on the facility.  The investors would then rent it back to the club.  Unfortunately, the D.N.R. and St. Clair County Health Department were just too difficult to deal with and they had to pass on the facility.

Several months later, the club located a pair of island off the north end of Harsons Island.  The two islands (connected by a walk bridge) had a four bedroom house, two car garage and were accessible via Harsons Island.  However, they still had to contend with the health department and the problem of club usage.

In the midst of trying to resolve these problems, high water (in the spring of 1985) destroyed the house and the buildings.  After that, we abandoned the idea of having a club house and the Investment Club returned the monies to its investors.

The decided to make the dues their current $125.00 and concentrate on having numerous social events throughout the year.  Let someone else worry about a club house……
